Germany Notebook Wurzburg Frankfurt Goethe William Kentridge O Sentimental Machine! MMK LNSY Sunday, May 13, 2018 My previous notebook which took me from January to now (including the first leg of my trip through Germany) was lost. I left it on the S1 train from Frankfurt South to Offenbach. I hope I can get it back. But there is a certain freedom in losing a sketchbook. No more drawings to complete, scattered thoughts now drift mercifully into memory's voids. --- Diptych: video screen w/ Raspberry Pi on one side, drawing on the other --- Reading Goethe's Poetry and Truth. Quite readable. I knew of him, and I think I read a translation (very poor, if I remember correctly) of Faust in highschool. I am struck, just from the first chapter, by his recognition of possibilities of the state, and his desire for a more personal, pure religion. Both things I relate to. He was a fascinating, brilliant man. I wish I could have seen more of his drawings at Goethehause, what I've seen seems impressive. I wonder if he painted -- he invented the color wheel after all. It seems to me Goethe is one of those men on the cusp of a new age-- in this case the enlightenment. So, like St. Augustine, Caravaggio or Goya, he fits in with my interest in the pivot points of history. --- Debating what I should do today -- bought a ticket to Wurzburg, findand an Air BnB has been a pain in the ass -- no one getting back to me. Will have to get a hotel room. I figure two days, then on to Heidelberg, for the Prinzhorn Collection, Then on to Munich. --- William Kentridge - O Sentimental machine! Projection on statues. The drawings are good. --- I don't hate it, but I was planning on drawing. It is loud. --- Spectacular water colors --- MMK --- Met a young man who asked where I got my staedtler lead holder -- He couldnt find one in Germany. I had an extra one, so I just gave it to him. He suggested I go to the MMK -- the Kentridge show was goo, but stressful, and the MMK was allegedly quiet. Unfortunately it was closed for construction. Painted a church. It was okay. Sending it to kelly, she'll like it. Then off to Wurzburg to see the Tiepolos. --- When I got to Wurzburg it was raining quite hard. I saw a young man on a unicycle riding throught the rain. Is this place Portland, OR?
